Uzumaki Naruto

Uzamaki Naruto is the main character in the series. He is naturally impetuous and tends to rush into combat without thinking, and is very hyperactive. However, he is capable of devising some quite clever Jutsus when necessary. Naruto is the sealed nine-tails demon fox, and when he is under great stress or when his friends are severely threatened it starts to become unsealed, don't miss this, it's cool! He dreams of being acknowledged by everyone in the Leaf village. He is an outcast (nothing like being a demon to ruin your reputation). He has a close bond with Iruka, initially hates Sasuke (he still hates him, but respects him too) and has a crush on Sakura. Who hates him. Naruto also likes Ramen. A lot. In fact, Kakashi once thought that Ramen and being Hokage were the only things he thinks about.

Uchiha Sasuke

A Genin/Chuunin level Ninja, Sasuke is the natural genius offspring of the powerful Uchiha Clan. The most outstanding Clan in Leaf Village, the Uchiha's advanced bloodline give them the ability of the Sharingan. This ability allows Sasuke to be able to perform other's Jutsu just by having once witnessed it in use, as well as the ability to anticipate what a person may do next, and see through GenJutsu among other things. Through the Sharingan, Sasuke has learned some of Rock Lee's powerful Taijutsu and who knows how many new technques he could have learned if he was allowed to watch the Chuunin exam third test preliminaries? Though Sasuke's talent is not only confined to the Sharingan, before this ability even awakened he was considered the #1 Academy Ninja and the #1 rookie Genin. It is becuase of these abilities that Orochimaru is interested in Sasuke and gave him a Curse Seal/Stigma. Receiving the small mark which appears on the neck through a bite from Orochimaru, afterwards the Sasuke falls unconscious. Then, strong enough to survive the 9/10 chance of immediate death, he regains concsiousness. Just by releasing Chakra the curse becomes active and forcibly pulls out more Chakra, stealing the persons mind. At this point the the small mark on the neck grows to wrap around Sasuke's whole body. It's a forbidden Jutsu which eats at the user's body. Sasuke's will power is surprisingly strong enough to hold back this curse and after Kakashi performs his Evil Sealing Method on him, it becomes even easier for him to control it and use his Chakra.

Haruno Sakura

Sakura has a crush on Sasuke, but she may well have some competition (from just about every female character in the damn series)… She's often self-conscious about her forehead, despite the fact that, if you compare it to the foreheads of some of the other characters, it's not that big at all. In fact, a heck of a lot of the male characters have a crush on her (for example Naruto (who she hates) and Rock Lee (who she's starting to respect)). At the start of the manga, all she seems to care about is love. However, during the Chuunin exam, her personality changes suddenly - she realizes that in her infatuation with Sasuke, she has neglected her duties as a team member - this coincides with her chopping off most of her hair (which she grew long because Sasuke apparently likes long hair). Then, she kicks sound-nin butt using her intelligence which is her main strength.

Hatake Kakashi

Hatake Kakashi, also known as 'the Copy Ninja Sharingan Kakashi', he is a Jounin assigned to look after and train Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto. Kakashi has memorized over 1000 Jutsus (probably more), all of which are very impressive. He learnt them through a special eye technique which can copy Jutsus called the Sharingan - also known as the 'copy wheel eye'. However, because he is not a member of the Uchiha clan, it seems to have been attached in an operation - there is a scar over it, and normally the Sharingan effects both eyes, not just one. Kakashi is a very powerful Ninja, one not to be underestimated. He is known around the world for his incredible powers. He is rivals with Gai, a fellow Jounin in the Leaf village. They have fought almost 100 times, 50 wins and 49 losses. Gai claims to be stronger but we'll have to see about that...

Haku

Haku is a former Hidden Mist Ninja, and is a very powerful one at that; he also may be a former member of the Hunter-nin team. In his first appearance, he is masquerading as a hunter-nin from the Mist country, sent to kill/capture Zabuza. Haku comes from an advanced bloodline and has many special techniques, one of which, being the Demonic Ice Mirrors - a technique where he surrounds his opponent with mirrors of ice, and travels between them at incredible speeds. This makes it nearly impossible to find him and attack him, as he can dodge from mirror to mirror at high speed. Another useful technique he uses is Water Needles, made from water, they are frozen and controlled by his Chakra to attack on his opponent. Haku normally uses Senbon - small needle-like weapons that are thrown to strike his opponent at pressure points, or puncture vital organs. Haku is a master of Acupuncture - he manages to strike Zabuza in such a way that he appears dead, but isn't, this is called a momentary death.

Momochi Zabuza

Zabuza is a Missing-nin formerly from the Hidden Mist Village, and the first major baddie that Naruto and team face after graduating as Genins. He is a close friend of Haku, and (being a mist nin) most of his Jutsus are water-oriented. He is also known as 'Devil of the Hidden Mist' since in the Hidden Mist Village, there used to be a final Genin graduation exam - a one-on-one fight to the death. However, one day, without pause or hesitation, a young man who was not even a ninja killed over a hundred of the students. That young man was Zabuza. The one-on-one system where best friends are forced to kill each other was abolished after this incident. Zabuza is a very powerful Jounin, as we see in the fights between him and Kakashi. One of his specialties is 'Water Prison' - a large ball of water that he uses to imprison his opponents, not so much powerful but very affective.

Iruka

A Chuunin level ninja, he is an instructor at the ninja academy. Introduced as Naruto's sensei, he and Naruto have a special connection. Iruka sees himself in Naruto because he also grew up as an orphan, he was around Naruto's age when his parents were killed by the Nine Tails Fox Monster. Naruto cares for him because Iruka was the first person to acknowledge him as precious person. Worrying that Naruto is being pushed too hard, Iruka often underestimates Naruto's abilities during his trials to become a great ninja. He is now Konohamaru's teacher.

Kyubi (Nine-Tails Fox Demon)

A gigantic fox which attacked the Leaf Village 12 years ago (from beginning of manga). A swing of just one of Kyubi's tails would cause tsunamis. The leaf village shinobi were assembled to fight the demon fox but were no match for its awesome power. After claiming the lives of many Shinobi, Kyubi was finally defeated by the 4th Hokage who died sealing the demon inside a new-born boy. The boy was Naruto.

Jiraiya

A Jounin level Ninja, he has grown to the point of achieving the title Sennin (Sage). A student of the 3rd Hokage, his teammates were Orochimaru and Tsunade, he is also one of the Legendary SanNin (3 Ninjas), and one of his students was the 4th Hokage. Jiraiya is an extremely talented and powerful ninja. Having left Hidden Leaf Village, for as yet unknown reasons, he became an author of adult manga. His most popular work being Come Come Paradise, which Kakashi enjoys. When he reappears, Jiraiya is in Leaf Village spying on women bathing; "research" for his next novel. It is at this point that fate puts him together with Naruto. He removes the seal Orochimaru put on Naruto in The Forest of Death, and gives him special training for the last trial of the Chuunin Selection Exam; which included Naruto tapping into some of Kyubi's strength at will, and Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Summoning Spell) of a powerful toad named Gamabunta.
