Step 1: Academy Student
This is probably the most crucial part of a shinobi's life. The students who attend are in training to become professional fighters and shinobi. The academy teachers will usually be tough on the students, but they'll also encourage them to work harder and move on. Few students will make the cut, and rise to the Genin level (step 2). If you're able to make it there, you have potential to move on, however it gets a lot harder after.

Step 2: Genin
Genin's are the lowest level ninjas and are most likely still in training. Although many of the Genin are interested in fighting, they'll be stuck doing jobs that involve nothing of the sort. Some things Genin are required to do are rescue animals, gardening, and work on missions with the fewest amount of violence. Genin are usually sent on rank D missions by upper level authority.

Step 3: Chuunin
These are the intermediate leveled ninjas. Chuunin usually perform more meaningful tasks, such including acting as a body guard for important people and protecting them. Chuunin are assigned to rank C missions or rank D, depending upon how trustworthy and dependable they are.

Step 4: ANBU
The ANBU is more of a less official type of rank. However, at this level, the ninja is sent to complete specific missions. Usually, an ANBU is to assassinate or track down the actions of any person that may be a potential threat. Of course, the authority will make sure the criminal is within the ANBU's power limits, as they wouldn't want to send the ANBU fighting against an extremely powerful villain. ANBU are considered an advanced intermediate rank in the ninja ladder. Among the ANBU, are the Missing and Hunter-Nin.
Missing-Nin: This is an ANBU level ninja, and for whatever reason has chosen to desert his village for money and wealth. They will perform any task they are hired to do, as long as there is money provided for them. Missing-Nin are associated with deception and are considered mercenaries.
Hunter-Nin: This is also an ANBU level ninja. Hunter-Nin are highly talented ninjas who are trained to track down any Missing-Nin in the area. Usually, a Hunter-Nin will destroy the body of a Missing-Nin completely, and will dispose of anything left over. They're told to hide any traces of the Missing-Nin, as rival clans can genetically dissect the body of the Missing-Nin to steal his jutsu.

Step 5: Hokage
Also known as Kage, these ninjas are considered high in respect and are extremely worthy of their opponents. Kage are usually the best ninjas in the village and are sent to track down only the strongest criminals (S class). Kage are extremely dedicated to winning their battles and protecting their village, so they will cross limits into sacrificing themselves to destroy the criminal. They are the most noble and most powerful warriors in a village or town.
